Getting physical therapy that involves training and strengthening of the body parts where you feel pain can be helpful in providing short term relief. However, as an athlete, if you want to get rid of pain in the long run, you need to understand your pain management options and which ones can improve your athletic performance. Athletes who are in pain seek guidance because they want to get back on track and compete again in their respective sports.

3D DIGITAL POSTURE SCAN

A 3D posture scan is a non-invasive imaging technique that captures a three-dimensional representation of an individual’s body posture. Utilising advanced technologies such as depth-sensing cameras or motion capture systems, it provides detailed insights into the spatial positioning and alignment of key body segments, aiding in biomechanical analysis and healthcare applications.

Pre & Post Op Lymphatic Massage.

MLD Is a relaxing massaged used to detoxify the body and help water retention.

MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture may be used as a treatment by itself or as part of an osteopathic consultation. The insertion of small needles aims to reduce pain and tension through modulating the bodies own response to a stimulus, whilst promoting healing.

FIRE / DRY CUPPING

Fire cupping involves creating a vacuum inside glass or silicone cups using a flame to induce suction onto the skin, promoting increased blood flow and relieving muscle tension. Dry cupping is a similar therapy, but without the use of heat, relying solely on suction to achieve therapeutic effects such as improved circulation and muscle relaxation.

CRYO-THERAPY FOR INJURIES

Cryotherapy is a therapeutic technique that involves exposing the body or specific body parts to extremely cold temperatures for a short duration. This innovative and non-invasive procedure is designed to harness the potential health benefits associated with cold exposure. Typically administered in specialized chambers or localized devices, cryotherapy is gaining popularity for its diverse applications.

FIRE / DRY CUPPING

Traditional Chinese methods create a vacuum by placing a burning substance inside the cup. For example, a cotton ball may be soaked in alcohol and ignited. As soon as the flame uses up the oxygen, the cup is quickly placed on your skin.

Traditional dry cupping uses multiple cups, which are strategically positioned and left in place for about five to 10 minutes. A method called wet cupping is done the same way except a small puncture is made before the cups are placed on your skin so the vacuum can draw out blood.

UNDERSTANDING PAIN AND ITS EFFECT ON YOUR ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

If you have heard of the motto, “No pain, No Gain,” then you know that pain is an inevitable part of progress. It is an everyday experience for athletes and most of the time pain is synonymous to sports. Most athletes love the challenge of pushing through pain and sometimes success is measured through how each individual athlete is able to overcome pain.

However, pain tolerance differs from person to person. While some can still perform and compete even when they are enduring pain, the effects of pain can be very evident through their performance.

Pain can stop you from experiencing the full range of motion of your muscles.

If you are suffering from chronic pain, your physical performance will also be affected and you will not be able to run, jump, push and pull like you did when you were at 100%.

What we deal with commonly:

Neck pain/neck restrictions

Shoulder pain/frozen shoulder

Back pain/sciatica

Tennis/Golfers Elbow

Manual Stretching

The goals of physical therapy for most patients focus on decreasing pain and swelling, increasing joint and soft tissue mobility, increasing flexibility, and increasing muscle performance.

By addressing these impairments, patients have an easier time returning to their previous level of activity.  While many machines and modalities are used to accomplish these goals, most skilled clinicians will use their hands as an adjunct to treatment.  Referred to as manual therapy, the use of a “hands-on” approach offers the physical therapist more insight into a patient’s condition.

The laying on of hands enables the clinician to detect changes in tissue tightness, tissue temperature, joint mobility, muscle flexibility, and muscle tone that may not be detected with machines or medical imaging. A skilled physical therapist with advanced training in manual therapy can assess these physiological changes as they occur during the specific procedure.

Manual therapy is a large emphasis of rehabilitation at The Sports Rehabilitation Center and different manual therapy treatments are offered to meet the needs of the patient.

FIRE / DRY CUPPING

What is Cupping Therapy ?

Traditional Chinese methods create a vacuum by placing a burning substance inside the cup. For example, a cotton ball may be soaked in alcohol and ignited. As soon as the flame uses up the oxygen, the cup is quickly placed on your skin.

Traditional dry cupping uses multiple cups, which are strategically positioned and left in place for about five to 10 minutes. A method called wet cupping is done the same way except a small puncture is made before the cups are placed on your skin so the vacuum can draw out blood.

Types Of Cupping

There are two types of cupping methods, including wet and dry. And two cupping techniques, stagnant and dynamic.

“Dry cupping uses a pumping method to draw the skin tissue inside the cup,” Ebinger said. “The subcutaneous tissue (the bottom layer of your skin) is pulled into the cups and held in place for a small amount of time—anywhere from 5 minutes to 15 minutes.”

With dry cupping, the cups can slide across the skin or remain in place, known as dynamic and stagnant cupping respectively.

Wet cupping, on the other hand, goes a step further. After creating a mild suction, a practitioner removes the cup and uses a small scalpel to make a tiny cut on that area of the skin. Then they use a second suction to draw out a small amount of the blood.

How Does Cupping Therapy Work ?

The vacuum produced by cupping therapy stimulates peripheral nerves, lifts connective tissues, and increases the circulation of blood and lymph fluids. As a result, toxins and cellular wastes trapped below the surface are rapidly pulled up to the skin and removed. Better blood flow also delivers extra oxygen and nutrients needed for healing.

Cupping therapy helps to relieve pain and improve movement by loosening connective tissues and relaxing muscle knots, creating an effect that’s similar to deep massage.

What Do Cupping Marks Reveal ?

Cupping marks may reveal information about your health. For example, Dr. Chernyak can tell the severity of the underlying toxin problem by the coloration of the cupping marks.

A moderate problem creates pink or red marks that go away in a few days, while a severe buildup of toxins results in deep scarlet, purple, or black discoloration that takes seven to 10 days to disappear.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture may be used as a treatment by itself or as part of an osteopathic consultation. The insertion of small needles aims to reduce pain and tension through modulating the bodies own response to a stimulus, whilst promoting healing.

Western medical acupuncture is the use of acupuncture following a medical diagnosis. It involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles of the body. This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins and inflammation markers. These substances have a physiological effect on the body and it Is likely that these naturally released chemicals are responsible for the beneficial effects experienced with acupuncture.

There are approximately 7,000 nerve endings in the human foot and each of them is a reflex point that corresponds to a body part. Reflexologists use special finger and thumb manipulations to stimulate these reflex points and they know exactly which area of the foot corresponds to which body part by learning the following Reflexology chart.

Practitioners who adhere to traditional beliefs about acupuncture believe that when Qi doesn’t flow freely through the body, this can cause illness. They also believe acupuncture can restore the flow of Qi, and so restore health.

Acupuncture is Good For

  • Chronic pain such as neck pain

  • Joint pain

  • Muscle pain

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Arthritis

  • Minor sports injuries

Is Acupuncture Safe

  • Relatively few complications from using acupuncture have been reported. However, complications have resulted from use of nonsterile needles and improper delivery of treatments.

  • When not delivered properly, acupuncture can cause serious adverse effects, including infections, punctured organs, and injury to the central nervous system.

POSTURE CORRECTION

When it comes to getting posture correction done right we consider ourselves experts and have learned a thing or two by treating many patients.

At the Medical Therapy Group we work our socks off to get your posture upright. The reason is that the state of your posture and how well your body functions overall are intimately related.

In short, the better your posture, the better your body works and the fewer health issues you have.

This is true at any age – from birth till death.

WHY POSTURE CORRECTION HAS TO BE DONE RIGHT

Many people are realizing the benefits (both visually and from a health perspective), of better posture and everyone seems to be an expert. You can even buy gadgets, belts and braces that promise to improve your posture too.

What we found when researching what works and what does not, was that the gadgets seemed to give some benefit initially but did not help in the long term. The common ways that professionals were trying to achieve posture correction was mostly with stretches and exercises to build up muscle strength and flexibility and to work on pulling and arching your body straight (bending backward).

On the face of it, this sounds like reasonable advice, except for a very basic fact of anatomy. If you have poor posture, it is not due to too much flexion (bending forward). The cause is slippage of one vertebra (spinal bone) forward on another. Bending backward will never fix this situation so exercising your back straight is not real correction (since you have to hold yourself up for the rest of your life).

Arched Back.jpg

To have to arch yourself straight for the rest of your life is not a solution. Posture correction done right results in an inherently upright and stable body – no exercises needed!

This may sound odd to some people who have been doing posture exercises but it is basic biomechanics and we see posture improvements 99% of the time with just one treatment.

The reason it can take time to completely get someone upright again is that our posture worsens hundreds of times over the course of our whole lives due to normal use, trauma, misuse, sports, hobbies, furniture, our jobs, and many other physical activities. Reversing this does not occur overnight but the results over time with repeated treatments are amazing.

Conclusion – Posture Correction Done Right

Most people are used to their bodies collapsing forward and the stress and feeling of heaviness that goes along with it. When you have posture correction done right, your body will feel weightless – since it returns to perfect balance.

No other method can replicate this feeling and over time muscles and soft tissue relax and become stronger, bone density increases, your breathing improves, balance and mobility also improve, you sleep better and more.
